Before you worry about character builds, the first question is whether your Mac can handle the salt dunes and chrome ruins — and the answer covers a lot of ground.

Apple Silicon — runs natively on M-series chips, so no Rosetta layer gets in the way.

Intel 64-bit — older Macs with x86 processors are still invited to the party.

Steam support — Freehold Games develops it, Kitfox Games publishes it, and the Mac version is official.

Controls — keyboard-first by design, with a layout that rewards patience more than reflexes.

Performance — the simulation runs deep, from digging through walls to melting them into lava, but the turn-based pace keeps demands modest.

Permadeath — when a run ends, it ends. The 24 castes and kits matter because you live with your choices.

The story drags you toward Barathrum the Old, a sentient cave bear, but the world itself does most of the talking. If your Mac is from the last decade, there's a good chance it's ready.

Ctrl+A Keeps You Alive to Reach the Six Day Stilt

Not everything announces itself. A few shortcuts and habits can keep a promising run from ending in frustration before you reach the Six Day Stilt.

  • Auto-explore with Ctrl+A: lets your character move through safe territory without constant tapping. It stops the moment something interesting appears — a creature, a chest, a threat — and saves your hands during long treks across the salt flats.
  • Look mode (Ctrl+L): highlight any tile and the game tells you what's there. Use it before stepping into a mushroom grove you don't recognize; some mushrooms have opinions.
  • Ability bar customization: mutations and activated items can be dragged to a hotbar at the bottom of the screen. Once muscle memory kicks in, you stop hunting through menus mid-fight.
  • Force-attack with Ctrl+direction: essential when you need to break a wall, smash a suspicious plant, or target something the auto-target logic won't prioritize.
  • Journal entries persist across deaths: the map resets, but your notes about legendary creatures and hidden lairs carry forward. A scribbled reminder about a lair full of chaingun turrets can save the next character's life.

Working toward the Rust Wells: a start-to-finish flow

Say you roll a mutant with the Carapace mutation and a knack for ranged combat. The goal is to survive long enough to loot the Rust Wells, an early challenge that rewards preparation over brute force.

Character creation: Carapace gives you natural armor that tightens as you level, freeing up weight for a rifle and ammunition. Pick up the Wayfaring skill so you don't get lost on the world map between Joppa and the wells. A defect like Tonic Allergy keeps things interesting without crippling the build.

Early minutes: talk to the zealot in Joppa, grab the quest, then scavenge chests in town before leaving. A musket or a bow matters more than melee weapons for this route. Stockpile lead slugs and a few bandages — the wells are a long walk east and the snapjaw scavengers along the way won't wave hello.

On the surface map: move east one tile at a time, checking local terrain before committing. If night falls and your vision shrinks, hold position and wait for dawn. Wandering into a legendary snapjaw's camp in the dark is a fast ticket back to the character creation screen. Use Look mode on every new tile before entering it.

At the Rust Wells: the wells themselves drop downward in a staircase pattern. Ranged combat lets you pick off rustaceans and qudzu from a distance, keeping your gear intact. qudzu rusts metal equipment on contact, so don't let them close. Use the force-attack command to clear qudzu vines from machinery before they spread. Every few floors, stop and tighten your Carapace — the extra armor value stacks up before tougher encounters.

Loot and exit: the real prize is the copper wire and scrap you collect, plus any schematics for tinkering. When inventory fills, use the world map to walk back to Joppa, sell what you don't need, and let the recoiler item (if you found one) become your emergency exit next time. No two trips to the wells play out the same, but the rhythm of scout, shoot, and retreat holds steady.
