The lights in Walton, Texas, flickered out weeks ago, and your group is running low on canned beans. Dawn breaks over a ruined strip mall, and from the second floor, you spot a shambler near the pharmacy entrance. You motion to a companion, point at a broken window, and start planning a silent climb down the drainpipe. This is the moment-to-moment tension that defines Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days, a side-scrolling shelter survival entry in the long-running franchise, now in Early Access for Mac.
What you’ll actually do
- Scavenge for survival. Poke through abandoned houses, diners, and storefronts to find food, wood, and medicine.
- Craft makeshift weapons. Turn a baseball bat, some nails, and desperation into something that buys you another hour.
- Move quietly or fight loud. Use stealth kills to thin out a horde before it notices you, or go swinging when a plan falls apart.
- Manage the shelter. Back at base, you decide who eats, who rests, and who keeps watch through the night.
- Explore 1980s Texas. The whole game unfolds in a dusty, dangerous stretch of Walton, rendered in grim side-scrolling detail.
The state of the game
PikPok released this Mac build in Early Access, with a 1.0 launch planned for March 2027. It already runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and the voice work is all in English, with interface support for nine languages. The developer has also confirmed eventual releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and GeForce NOW. As of version 0.17.1, the foundation is solid: the core loop of scavenging ruins, crafting, and tense stealth encounters gives you a clear picture of the grim road ahead. If you enjoy survival games where the quiet moments are just as heavy as the combat, this is one to watch.
Don’t just stumble out of the first safe house and start looting the nearest gas station — the opening hours will punish overconfidence. Spend your first two days doing nothing but listening. Stand near windows before you open doors, watch how light falls through cracked ceilings, and learn the rhythm of the shamblers outside. One survivor with a heavy backpack and a limp attracts more attention than two moving light.
Speed Up Stealth Kills with Spacebar
- Tap the spacebar during a stealth kill. Nobody tells you this, but a quick tap speeds up the takedown animation just enough to slip back into shadow before a patrol turns around.
- Hold down
Shiftwhen assigning beds. It locks the current layout so you can shift-click a whole row of survivors without accidentally dragging the wrong person onto a cot. - Morale isn’t just a bar. If someone’s resting in a room with a boarded window and a radio, they bounce back noticeably faster than someone in a bare storage closet. Furnishings matter.
- Double-click the shelter map. It toggles a quick overhead view of escape routes from each floor — invaluable when a night raid goes loud and you need to pull everyone toward the back exit.
- macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel Macs supported)
Questions I actually get
Is this a side-scroller or a first-person game?
It’s a side-scrolling survival game, so you view and move through the world from a 2D perspective rather than a first-person view.

Nobody has pulled up a chair yet. If you used it on a real Saturday, say what the hour was.
